appetizers

Holidays, special occasions and lazy Sunday mornings are perfect excuses to host a brunch. While many people concentrate on the main courses and desserts, starting with an appealing appetizer can set the tone for the whole day. Tiny bite-sized treasures serve duel purposes – to stave off guests’ appetites while they are waiting for the entrées and to give people mini ice-breaking conversation starters. The key is to serve delicious appetizers that are large enough to satisfy while being small enough not to ruin appetites. Salads and soups can be served for appetizers as can mini muffins and bagels or silver dollar pancakes, but the most revered and talked about appetizers contain savory or sweet ingredients that are tempting to all.

Any number of ingredients can be used when making appetizers. Vegetable appetizers include spinach squares, small stuffed tomatoes and vegetable platters complete with carrots, broccoli and cucumbers. Ranch or dill dressing makes a tasty dipping sauce that goes well with most vegetables. Fruit is another popular choice for appetizers. Miniature cups of fruit salad are easy to make, but with a little more effort, chunks of fruit can be placed on skewers and stuck into a fresh pineapple for appetizers that are equally pleasing to the palate and the eye. Using cookie cutters to form attractive shapes from pieces of fruit is another way to make interesting appetizers. For a savory appetizer, line mini muffin tins with dough, fill with eggs, bacon and diced onion, and bake until golden brown. The end result is a personal snack that people love to eat. Savory or sweet, appetizers are a wonderful way to start any brunch.
