Orange French Toast With Strawberries

Wonderful specialty baked bread covered with a brown sugar, corn syrup, egg and cream mixture flavored with vanilla. Fresh out of the oven, the french toast is covered with strawberries in orange liqueur and dusted with powdered sugar.

Ingredients -

1 loaf Challah or Brioche Bread, sliced into 1 ½” thick slices
1/2 cup Butter, unsalted
1 cup Brown Sugar, packed
2 tablespoons Corn Syrup
5 large Eggs
3/4 cup Heavy Cream
3/4 cup Milk
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1/4 teaspoon Coarse Salt
2 teaspoons Grand Marnier or Cointreau (orange liqueur)
Powdered Sugar

Strawberries:
1 quart Strawberries, hulled and sliced ¼” thick (lengthwise)
1/4 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Grand Marnier or Cointreau

 
Preparation:

1. Butter a large 9 x 13 baking dish.

2. In a small saucepan, melt butter with corn syrup and brown sugar. Stir until brown sugar dissolves.

3. Pour sugar mixture into baking dish.

4. Place the bread on top of the sugar mixture. Squeeze slices to fit, making one layer.

5. In a medium-mixing bowl, whisk the eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla extract, coarse salt and 2 teaspoons of orange liqueur.

6. Pour egg mixture over bread slices.

7. Cover baking dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight.

8. in a small bowl, combine strawberries, sugar, and orange liqueur. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 24 hours.

9. Remove baking dish from refrigerator, and let stand 20 minutes at room temperature.

10. Preheat oven to 350 F.

11. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until french toast is golden and puffed.

12. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top.

13. Serve hot with strawberries.

 


Brunch Tips -
Orange Liqueur
The orange liqueur can be substituted with orange juice if absolutely necessary. Use the orange liqueur if at all possible, the flavor difference is worth it.
