Salads taste great with any meal and brunch is no exception. Since brunch can consist of mostly breakfast foods or feature savory dishes that are traditionally served at nighttime meals, choosing the right salad
is essential. Fresh garden salad or green salad served with a zesty vinaigrette is perhaps the most versatile of salads since it can be topped with any number of ingredients to echo the flavor of the meal. Meats like ham, turkey or crumbled
bacon increase the protein content and add another dimension to a salad. Grilled salmon or shrimp are other favorites that often make an appearance at brunch gatherings. Chunked, crumbled or shredded cheeses such as cheddar, blue cheese
or Parmesan are savory toppings that most people enjoy.
While green and garden salads are a wonderful choice, there are many other options that can also lift a brunch to another level. Spinach salad is made with large whole leaves of spinach or delicate baby spinach, mushroom and strawberries and tossed with
balsamic vinaigrette. Bacon, dried cranberries and walnuts are sometimes mixed in to add texture, color and taste. Waldorf salad contains apples, celery, mayonnaise and walnuts and is served over a bed of lettuce. Raisins, cranberries or grapes have been
added over the years, again to increase the flavor, color and texture of the salad. Fruit salads can be served as appetizers, with main courses or as a dessert. Cole slaw is another type of salad that consists of shredded vegetables like carrots and cabbage,
although apples can replace the cabbage for a lighter flavor. The many varieties of beautiful salads can brighten the brunch table and make a delicious fare for guests to enjoy.
